Meet Tanner Halbig

Hometown: Evansville, IN

College and Major: Butler University
Major: Business

How did you get involved in Young Life? I got involved with Young Life when I came to Butler, although I had heard about Young Life many times before this but just never participated. I found out about the YL Bible Study at Butler, which I went to for the first few weeks. I also met some people like Doug Barnack who then explained to me about the process of becoming a Young Life leader. Initially, I was not sure if I would be able to handle the commitment but decided to give it try anyway. The free meals at Jack and Linda's house were also a positive.

What about Tech excites you the most? Something that excites me most about Tech is the dynamic it offers. Butler definitely feels like it has a "bubble" around it, so it is extremely easy to forget about the world outside of our campus. While most people at Butler probably come from middle to upper class families, I feel like Tech will definitely offer perspective on the people that are not as blessed financially as my family. While reading Tony Dungy's book Uncommon, I learned that Indianapolis has one of the worst graduation rates in the nation at around 30%. This is a huge challenge that I believe falls to people like Young Life leaders who can go make a significant impact on the lives of these high schoolers.

What would people be surprised to know about you? I think most people would be surprised to know that I became an uncle in the fourth grade and have three nieces and two nephews who mean a lot to me.

Hobbies: One of my favorite hobbies is definitely reading. I also enjoy watching movies and having meaningful conversations with people in my life.

What are you listening to on your I-Pod? I listen to a wide variety of music, which ranges from hardcore to rap. Recently, I have really enjoyed Mumford and Sons. My favorite Christian band is The Glorious Unseen, and if I was forced to give my favorite rapper, I would say Wiz Khalifa (though I do not recommend using his lyrics as your life philosophy).

How did you get involved in Young Life? As a middle school student, I became involved in Wyldlife as I attended weekly Bible studies and monthly Wyldlife clubs. My leaders became my role models and best friends; they greatly impacted my relationship with God, as well as my life and personality, to shape me into the person I am today. My leaders inspired me to become a Wyldlife leader at Castle South Middle School as a high school senior. When going to college, I began going to weekly YL Bible studies and dinners and then eventually started with training to become a YL leader in Indy. I was then placed to be a leader at Tech High School!

What about Tech excites you the most? I am most excited that Tech is SO different than Castle and the community that I am used to leading in. Tech will challenge me in my walk with Christ and everyday life as I learn to trust God with everything while impacting the lives of kids in a community that is completely out of my comfort zone. I am excited that the Tech YL team is small and growing along with the YL program at the school. I have many exciting ideas and insight to contribute from my previous experience as a Wyldlife leader!

What would people be surprised to know about you? People may be surprised to know that I was a cheerleader for 7 years! A lot of people also don't realize that I absolutely LOVE to eat a lot! My favorite is Mexican. I am obsessed with the TV show NCIS and waste WAY too much of my time watching it! One of my FAVORITE movies is Finding Nemo!

Hobbies: I spend a lot of my time working out. Fitness is very important to me, and I go to the gym quite a bit! I enjoy taking Yoga and Pilates classes. I love to perform and be in front of people! I was a competitive dancer for 15 years, so I love to dance! I enjoy sleeping...and I must get at least 8 hours of sleep every night! I am a lifeguard over the summer at the community pool! I LOVE to vacation...especially to a beach!

What are you listening to on your I-Pod? I really don't have one particular "type" of music that is my favorite. A lot of the music I listen to are things that I have danced to in a choreographed routine because they have special meanings to me. The one other singer I like is John Mayer!! I absolutely LOVE all of his music because I'm a huge guitar fan and enjoy how relaxing it is.

CLUB 12/9

Yesterday was our last club for the semester. Christmas Club! It was one of our best ones yet! Over 90 kids came to hang out. We were able to introduce one of our new leaders, Courtney to the chaos and she did a great job jumping right in! Club was filled with snowball fights, tree decorating, rapping about Santa, and eating Oreos off of a piece of plexiglass. Super fun! But most importantly, Jaime shared the Gospel. She told the kids the story of the Prodigal Son and how much God loves them.

Merry Christmas!

We had a great time celebrating Christmas, reminiscing about 2010, and remembering all the God has done at Tech this year. We can't WAIT to see what God has in store for us in 2011. Merry Christmas!

CLUB 11/11

Our fall themed club was super crazy and fun! Over 60 kids came to hang out. We gutted pumpkins, bobbed for marshmallows in a tub of whip cream, watched Kelsey drink a bottle of mustard, and ate carmel onions.

CLUB 10/14

For our first club of the school year, we had THE FLOOR IS LAVA club! (Remember that game when you were a kid?) 40 kids turned up to play lava themed games, chow down some pizzas, and listen to the Gospel. We love our club kids. It's so great to see the familiar faces back again this year! And we were so excited that the Titans football players were allowed to come to club before practice. Thanks coaches!
